The Objective of the Game

The winner is the last player to remain without going bankrupt. Whenever a player goes bankrupt, they are out of the game, and when only one player remains, they are crowned champion. You build your wealth by buying properties, developing them with houses and hotels, and forcing anyone who lands on your land to pay rent.

Two Play Modes: Choose Your Way

When starting the table, the table creator chooses one of two modes, and this choice changes some of the rules:

  • Standard Mode: The full mode with all its features. You will first choose the continent from which the property names are taken (Asia, South America, North America, Oceania, Europe, Africa). The currency is in dollars ($), and the following are allowed: auctions, trading, and the treasure (free parking), and building up to 4 houses then a hotel.
  • Arabic Mode: A simplified version with fixed Arabic names and currency in pounds. In this mode: there are no auctions, no trading, and no treasure on free parking, and you build up to 3 stalls then a hotel. And if no one buys a property, it simply remains without an owner.

Turn Mechanics (How to Play Your Turn)

  1. Starting point: All players start from the "GO" square.
  2. Rolling the dice: On your turn you choose "roll the dice," and two dice are rolled for you (each from 1 to 6), and you move forward by their sum.
  3. Passing GO: Whenever you pass the GO square during your movement, you collect a salary of 200.
  4. Landing exactly on GO: If you stop exactly on the GO square, you get a doubled bonus of 400.
  5. Making the decision: After you stop, the system handles the square you landed on (purchase, rent, card, tax... as explained below).

The "Double" Rule (Two Matching Numbers)

  • If the two dice show the same number (such as 4 and 4), this is a "double" and grants you an extra turn: you move, then roll again.
  • But beware: three consecutive doubles in the same turn send you immediately to jail as punishment for your recklessness.
  • Example: You rolled (3 and 3) so you moved and got an extra turn, then (5 and 5) another extra turn, then (2 and 2) — this is the third double, so you go straight to jail.

Types of Squares on the Board

  • Properties (colored): Lands that are bought and built upon with houses and hotels, and are grouped into sets according to color.
  • Stations: The more stations you own, the higher the rent you collect from each one of them.
  • Utilities: Their rent is calculated by multiplying the visitor's dice number by a multiplier, so the higher the number rolled, the more is paid.
  • Tax: Landing on it requires paying a specified amount.
  • Chance / Community Chest: You draw a random card with a surprise effect (see its dedicated section).
  • GO: The starting point and source of salary.
  • Jail: If you land on it by passing, you are "just visiting" and nothing happens.
  • Go to Jail: Landing on it sends you straight to jail.
  • Free Parking: In standard mode you collect the "treasure" from it, and in Arabic mode it is just a safe place to rest.

Buying Properties

When you land on a property without an owner and you own its price, two options appear for you:

  • Buy: You pay the price and the property becomes yours.
  • Pass (don't buy): You give up the purchase.

What happens if you pass? It depends on the mode:

  • Standard mode: The property is put up for auction among all players (see "Auction" below).
  • Arabic mode: The property simply remains without an owner until someone else lands on it and buys it later.
Closed the purchase window by mistake? You still have the "reopen the purchase window" option to retrieve it as long as the decision is still pending.

Rent and the Claim Bell (Very Important!)

This is one of the most important mechanics of the game and differs from traditional Monopoly, so pay close attention to it:

When another player lands on a property you own (and that is not mortgaged), the rent is not deducted automatically. Instead, you receive a notification of the rent due, and you must claim your rent yourself by pressing the "rent bell" (the spacebar on the computer, or swiping down on the phone).

  • If you claim in time: The rent is deducted from the player and added to your balance immediately.
  • If you are late: You lose the rent! The opportunity to claim ends as soon as the next player begins their turn and rolls the dice.
Example: You own a "blue street" with two houses on it. Your opponent landed on it so you received a notification of the rent due. You immediately press the spacebar (or swipe down), so the rent is deducted from the opponent and goes into your pocket. If you got distracted and didn't press until someone rolled the dice, your rent for that round is lost.

What raises the rent value?

  • Owning the complete color group doubles the rent of properties that have no buildings.
  • Building houses then a hotel raises the rent significantly.
  • In stations: the more stations you own, the higher the rent.
  • In utilities: the rent = the visitor's dice number multiplied by a multiplier, so a higher result means a larger payment.

Color Groups and Building (Houses and Hotels)

The real power in Monopoly comes from monopolizing a complete color group and then building on it to raise the rent. There are several conditions for building:

  • That you own all the properties of the group of the same color.
  • That none of the properties of the group is mortgaged.
  • The even-building rule: You cannot build a second house on a property before the rest of the properties of the group have received their first house. That is, you always build on the property with the fewest houses first. And the opposite when selling: you sell from the property with the most houses first.
  • You build houses gradually up to the maximum (4 houses in standard mode, or 3 stalls in Arabic mode), after which the property turns into a hotel (the highest rent level).
Example: You own all three red properties. You start by building a house on each of them evenly so the rent jumps, then you continue up to 4 houses on each property, then you replace them with a hotel — and at that point landing on your land becomes very costly for your opponents.

Mortgage (Getting Liquidity)

If you need quick cash, you can mortgage any property you own for an amount from the bank. A mortgaged property does not collect rent until you lift its mortgage (by paying the un-mortgage cost). All of this is done from the "manage properties" option in your hand. Note: you cannot mortgage a property that has houses on it; you must sell the houses first.

Auction (Standard Mode Only)

If the player landing on an unowned property passes (or did not own its price), the property is put up for auction among all players. Each player submits their secret bid during the auction time, and the one with the highest bid wins the property and pays the value of their bid. If no one submits a serious bid, the property remains without an owner.

Jail

You enter jail by one of these ways: landing on the "Go to Jail" square, drawing a card that orders you to, or rolling three consecutive doubles.

To get out of jail, you have these options:

  • Pay the fine (50): You pay the fine and get out to play your turn normally.
  • Use a "Get Out of Jail" card: If you own it (it comes from Chance/Community Chest cards), you get out for free.
  • Try to roll a double: You roll the dice, and if a double comes you get out and move (but without an extra turn).

Forced exit: If you stay in jail for 3 turns without getting out, you are forced to pay the fine on the last attempt and then move.

Chance and Community Chest Cards

When you land on a "Chance" or "Community Chest" square, a random card is drawn for you. Among the types of its effects:

  • Collect an amount: An amount is added to your balance.
  • Pay an amount: You pay an amount (it goes to the treasure in standard mode).
  • Collect from every player: Every other player pays you a specified amount.
  • Pay every player: You pay every other player a specified amount.
  • Property maintenance fees: You pay an amount for every house and hotel you own.
  • Go to jail: You are sent straight to jail.
  • Get Out of Jail card: You keep it to use later to get out for free.
  • Move to a specific square: You move to a particular location (and you may collect the salary if you pass GO).
  • Move backward: You go back a number of steps.
  • Move to the nearest station/utility: You move to the nearest station or utility and deal with what landing on it entails.

Taxes and the Treasure (Free Parking)

  • Taxes and fines: In standard mode, the amounts paid accumulate in the "treasure" (starting from 500). And in Arabic mode they go to the bank and disappear.
  • The treasure on free parking (standard mode only): The first player to land on the "Free Parking" square collects the entire accumulated treasure, then the treasure returns to zero to start accumulating again.
  • Arabic mode: Free parking is just a safe rest with no reward at all.

Trading (Standard Mode Only)

Trading is a powerful diplomatic weapon for completing color groups. You start it from the "trade" option in your hand, and you go through simple steps in order:

  1. Choose the partner: The player you want to negotiate with.
  2. Choose the property you are offering: One of your properties, or "no property."
  3. Enter the amount you are offering: Money you add to your offer (or zero).
  4. Choose the property you are requesting: One of the partner's properties, or "no property."
  5. Enter the amount you are requesting: Money you request from the partner (or zero).
  6. Confirm: You review the deal summary and then send it.

After sending, the deal appears to the partner and they have a short time (about 15 seconds) to accept or reject it. If they accept, the properties and money are transferred between the two parties automatically.

Example: You are missing one blue property to complete the group, and it is in your opponent's possession. You offer them your yellow property + 150 in exchange for their blue property. If they accept, you complete your blue group and start building on it.

Debts, Liquidation, and Bankruptcy

When you are asked to pay an amount (rent, tax, card...) larger than your balance, you enter into debt, and your ability to roll the dice or trade is frozen until you return your balance to zero or more. To settle the debt you must liquidate your possessions:

  • Sell houses/hotels to recover part of their value.
  • Mortgage properties to get cash.

When does bankruptcy happen? If you liquidate everything you own and still cannot cover the debt, you are declared bankrupt and out of the game:

  • If the debt is to another player: all your possessions (and whatever is left of your money) transfer to them.
  • If the debt is to the bank: your properties return to being unowned, and your remaining money goes to the treasure.

Winning and Losing Rules

  • Winning: You win when all your competitors go bankrupt and you remain the only player on the board.
  • Losing: You lose by being declared bankrupt (your inability to pay your debts even after liquidating all your possessions), so you are out of the game while the rest continue.
